Creating the atmosphere of a great roaring twenties speakeasy party doesn’t have to cost much at all. Using just a few clever ideas – you can convert an ordinary room into a jazz club that feels straight out of Prohibition. This can be done by replacing expensive props with free custom printed templates.
Free Printables for your Murder Mystery Party
Movie Posters
Let’s start with the walls. You can download and print our free 1920s movie posters to hang around the room. They instantly give a room an old and dated look, and you can scale them up or down depending on the size of your room. You can edit all of the text to make it relate directly to your party or your guests.
There are movie posters, theater posters, and various murder mystery posters that are all completely editable to your tastes. I like to add guests real names into movie posters. That always gets a good laugh.
Newspaper Templates
Another great prop that’s completely free are our custom newspapers. I’ve included some news stories, but you can swap them out for something related to your event or to your guests. You can also add some photos or pictures of your own.
Print these out and spread them around the event, and it’ll quickly sell the 1920s atmosphere. It’s also a nice keepsake for players to take home with them and to hold up in photos.
You newspaper template is already browned, so when printed in color, it looks worn and aged.

Wine Labels
For the drinks area, try our free wine labels. These can be wrapped around any bottle you already have, to make them really old. There are a bunch of templates, so choose the ones that best suit your theme and colors.
All of the text and images can be edited to suit your tastes, and you can even personalize them to your guests. It makes great keepsakes to remember your party by.
If you’re quick at printing and glueing, you could even add the winner’s name to one of the wine labels moments before handing it off to them.

Music
Music is one of the easiest ways to add an old-school mood. There’s tons of free music that you can find on Youtube and Spotify that’ll fit with your theme. I recommend jazz or piano instrumentals. I find that any music with lyrics can be distracting during gameplay.
We’ve also created our own free 1920s jazz music playlist that’s made with copyright-free music, so if you ever decide to upload clips of your party on Youtube, you won’t get any copyright strikes to your video.

Cheap Printable for your Murder Mystery Party
Bootleg Crate Labels
If you’re okay with spending a few dollars. Bootleg crate labels are super cheap, and make a HUGE difference to your rooms. You simply stick them onto whatever boxes you have lying around, and they make it look like contraband liquor has just arrived. If you want to have a bar area, wrap some boxes in brown paper, and stick these on the front of them. Put the boxes next to a table, and you’ve got an instant makeshift bar, without needing to add anything else.
These types of crate labels have an old-timey design to them, so when glued to a box, they’ll make them look like labeled crates of prohibition booze.
1920s Menu Templates
If you’re serving a full dinner, use these 1920s Art Deco dinner menus. They don’t cost much, and they’re a really nice touch for tables. They’re customizable, so you can input your your whole menu into them and add any additional text or images you’d like.
There are 3 templates in this pack and they all have a 1920s look to them with different colors and designs to match whatever colors you’ve chosen to use.
Home Casino
Gambling was a big part of speakeasies, and you can add some of that without setting up a full casino. A small roulette table can be put on top of a table as a design piece, and perhaps for some late night gambling when the party is over.
These are available online and don’t cost much for the smaller ones. I also like to buy packs of fake money that I hand out before playing. This lets players participate without losing any hard-earned money during the night.

1920s Speakeasy Decor Ideas on a Budget
You don’t need to cover every surface in expensive props to make your party look good. There can also be TOO MUCH. Just add a few of your favorite items – posters, labels, a roulette table, and some bootleg crate labels, and you’re all done. These can be downloaded and designed weeks in advance and setup to see how they look. You can adjust from there.

Frequently Asked Questions
What colors are most associated with the 1920s speakeasy aesthetic?
Black and gold are the most popular and what most people stick to. But you can also go with deep red, burgundy, and dark greens, especially as accent colors against a black base. You’ll want to avoid white, pastel, and any bright primary colors. They just don’t match the theme very well.
Do I need to hire a venue or can I use my home?
Your home is best, as long as you have enough space for all your guests. Use the space wisely and don’t overfill it with decorations. Have space for guests to move around as well as plenty of seating. No one wants to be standing for hours after work.
How long does it take to set up?
Give yourself 2 to 3 hours for a full setup that includes tablecloths, wall prints, candles, and the bar area. You can setup most of the items slowly way in advance to cut down time on the day. It’s also recommended to do things in advance in case prints don’t look the way you’d like the first time.
