This is my list of the top 5 teen mystery shows that I’ve enjoyed watching. This doesn’t necessarily mean that the shows are made for teens – simply that the main characters are teenagers or in a high school setting. There’s some really great shows on this list, so lets get straight to it.
1. Deadboy Detectives
First, I’ll start with the show I watched most recently. This show is about 2 teenage ghosts who choose to stay on Earth to solve supernatural mysteries. They’ll have to go up against demons, witches and other supernatural entities while avoiding Death from capturing them and sending them to the afterlife. It’s set in The Sandman universe, so if you’ve watched that show – you know what to expect. It’s a fun watch, so you might not want to sleep on this one.
2. School Spirits
Keeping with the undead detective theme, there’s School Spirits. This is about a girl who is trying to solve her own murder. Her ghost is trapped in the school she died in, but she has no memory of what happened. She’ll have to slowly piece together the mystery while interacting with other ghosts that died there as well. This was another fun watch with lots of red herrings to keep you guessing until the end. Give it a try.
3. Veronica Mars
Veronica Mars is one my all-time favorite shows. She’s a high school student who’s trying to solve the murder of her best friend. In her corrupt town, she never knows who to trust and what secrets they are keeping. In every episode, she digs deeper into everyone’s history to slowly reveal dark secrets that will help her unravel the mystery behind her friend’s murder. Veronica Mars is snarky and smart, and doesn’t take BS from anyone. There are 4 seasons and a film, and they’re all excellent TV.
4. The Hardy Boys
I only read a few Hardy Boys books as a kid. I was more focused on The Famous Five, but I always wanted to give it a proper try. Now I can with the reimagined Hardy Boys TV show. It’s not a carbon copy of the books, but rather a darker story and bigger mysteries to solve. After their father starts investigating a mystery that’s very personal to them, the boys begin their own investigation to uncover a conspiracy that puts everyone in mortal danger. It’s been a really fun watch so far, and although it’s set in the 1980s, the story-telling still feels richer and more modern than the types of mystery books I grew up on.
5. Lockwood and Co.
This show is about a ghost-hunting agency who work in a ghost-infested London. Each one of them has a psychic ability that they can use to help them with their cases. In this strange universe, only youths have these psychic abilities, so they are trained from young to fight ghosts and try to join the best agencies possible. This show jumped between fun moments, heartbreaking scenes and heroic actions. All of this happens in the very first episode, and it only gets better from there. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I think you will too.
