High Potential is a funny and super interesting show. It’s actually based off of a French show called HPI, which is up to five seasons already. So, there’s still a lot of stories left to tell. It’s centered around Morgan, a single mom who has a gift for seeing details that no one else does. She’s messy, honest, a bit unpredictable, and that’s exactly what makes her so fun to watch. Every episode brings a fresh mystery, but under it all, there’s a larger story where she tries to investigate the 15-year-old disappearance of the father of her daughter. So, if you like that kind of energy, here are five other shows that share that same mix of brains, humor, and heart. These are all classics.
1. Veronica Mars
Before streaming took over, Veronica Mars was already doing something bolder than others shows out there. She’s sharp tonged, skeptical, and far more observant than the adults around her. She digs into the secrets of her small California town and solves mysteries that no one else can. The main mystery in the first season centers on the murder of Veronica’s best friend, which drives everything she does. The show builds from there, diving into deeper conspiracies that stretch far beyond high school drama. Veronica Mars is smart, emotional television that proves a clever character can carry a story no matter their age. Don’t be fooled by the high school setting. This is an amazing detective show and one of my absolute favorites hands down.
2. The Mentalist
Patrick Jane used to pretend he was a psychic, reading minds for fame and money. After tragedy struck, he dropped the act and started using his real skill – razor sharp observation, to help the police. He’s charming, talkative, and always one step ahead of everyone in the room, which makes him both loved and hated at the same time. The big running mystery centers on the hunt for Red John, a serial killer who destroyed Jane’s life. That slow pursuit gives the show weight behind all the weekly investigations. The Mentalist balances smart storytelling with moments of real vulnerability. It stays exciting from start to finish. It’s a great show that really ramps up with each season. It’s one of those shows that you have to binge watch.
3. Castle
Richard Castle is a best-selling mystery writer who tags along with the NYPD for inspiration. He’s playful, impulsive, and constantly annoying the detectives he works with, especially Kate Beckett, the lead investigator. His childlike curiosity and creative approach often help solve cases in ways regular police work never could. What starts as a bit of fun turns into a partnership full of heart and tension. While the show delivers new mysteries each week, a long-running story line explores the unsolved murder of Beckett’s mother. Castle mixes romance, comedy, and clever detective work in a way that keeps it endlessly watchable.
4. Psych
Psych follows Shawn Spencer, a guy with a photographic memory and a talent for reading people so well that he convinces the police he’s psychic, but he’s most definitely not. His sharp instincts and quick humor make him both impressive and exhausting to those around him. He turns every investigation into a game, but somehow still gets results. He jokes through crime scenes, teases suspects, and constantly tests everyone’s patience, especially his best friend, Gus, who somehow manages to keep him balanced. Beneath the jokes, though, there’s real heart. You see their friendship carry the show through every absurd situation. The ongoing thread involves Shawn trying to keep his secret from being exposed, especially as the cases get bigger and riskier. Psych works because it never forgets to be fun. Even when the mystery gets dark, it keeps a light spirit.
5. Monk
Adrian Monk was once a top San Francisco detective, but after his wife’s death, his obsessive compulsive disorder took control. He can’t shake habits that make his daily life almost impossible. And yet, those same habits make him a brilliant investigator. Everything has to be perfect. Every clue has to make sense, and he won’t rest until it does. At the heart of the show is Monk’s search for the truth about his wife’s murder, a mystery that hangs over the entire series. Monk is funny and sad in equal parts. It finds humor in his struggles without losing sight of his pain. It’s a fun show that still holds up today.
