Free Online Murder Mystery Games – Play Detective Cases Online

By Sherwin Clary Reading time: 8 min
Free online murder mystery games are either browser-based or downloadable detective cases you can play without paying a cent. They range from short interactive browser games to free PDF case files you play on your pc, or print out. These are generally a way to try games before needing to pay for one. Free online games are great for trying the format – but more serious players will move to a full printable case file experience once they’re sure they enjoy it. The best free case file is Deceptive Demise, that’s available to download and play immediately at no cost.

There are a lot of “free murder mystery games” online. The quality varies enormously. All of them are very short. But they’ll definitely give you a decent idea of what games are like from each publisher. So, they’re definitely worth trying out.

I designed Deceptive Demise specifically as a free introduction to the case file format – something that gives you a real sense of how these games work without asking you to pay first. It’s a very short and easy game, but you’ll immediately know if you want to try out a full game that will take you about 6 times as long to complete.

Types of Free Online Murder Mystery Games

Free dinner party scripts PDF download, for groups 2-3 hours Characters, talking points (or script) Variable quality
Murder mystery riddles Read online, no download needed 5-15 minutes each Short lateral-thinking puzzles usually in a crime scenario No narrative depth

What Free Online Games Can and Can’t Do

Free games let you experience your genre of choice without needing to pay anything, and the best of them are genuinely good. If you’ve never solved a murder mystery case file before, a free game is the right place to start – you’ll know immediately if you like the genre and if you like the style of the publisher. If you don’t, be sure to try out others.

That said, online games do have some limitations whether they’re free or paid – see how digital compares to physical and printable case files for a detailed breakdown of what you gain and lose with each format.

What most free online murder mystery games lack
  • Depth of evidence. Paid full-length cases typically have tons of physical evidence. Free cases, particularly browser-based ones, usually only have one or two bits of evidence to give you a general idea of how they work. There’s less to examine, fewer inconsistencies to catch, and a thinner investigation.
  • Multiple objectives. Full cases build progressively through 3 objectives (unless you’re playing one of our cases with up to 7 objectives), each unlocking new evidence. Most free games have 1 or 2 simple objectives.
  • The physical evidence advantage. This depends on the type of game you choose. Some are only digital and have to played on your screen, but many are in PDF format and can be printed out. It’s much easier to play a game on paper than on your screen.
  • Story richness. Character backstories, red herrings, period-specific details, – all the things that make a case memorable. Short free cases simply can’t fit any of this in. There will be a basic story.

None of this means that free games aren’t worth playing. They’re an honest representation of the format but on a smaller scale. They’re samplers, not a full meal. Although, I must admit that our sampler goes further than any other case file out there, and actually has a good story and 2 interesting objectives to complete.

Deceptive Demise — The Best Free Case File

Deceptive Demise is the free case file I designed as an introduction to the Print Mysteries format. It’s a complete short case built to the same evidence and story standards as the full paid cases, just wayyy shorter.

Deceptive Demise Free

Setting Hollywood Film Set
Difficulty Easy (Beginner)
Objectives 2
Suspects 3
Duration 30-45 minutes
Players 1-4
Format PDF download or online
Price Free

The case is set on a Hollywood film production. An actress is found dead in her dressing room. Three suspects all had access to the scene: a fellow cast member, a crew member, and someone from the production team. They all had motive, but what about means and opportunity?

You’re given the same type of evidence you’d get in a full case: suspect interviews, keycard access logs, and personal documents that tell a story about what goes on behind the scenes. There are two objectives to solve. One is puzzle-based and the other is deduction-based. This will give you an idea of how cases normally play out.

The case is rated easy and was designed specifically so that first-time players can complete it without needing hints, although we do have hints available. It’s short enough to play on a screen without printing – something the larger cases genuinely aren’t, because scrolling back and forth through 40 pages of evidence on a phone or laptop is not a good experience.

How to Play Deceptive Demise

1

Download the free PDF

Get Deceptive Demise from the free murder mystery download page. The file will be emailed as soon as you’ve confirmed your email address.

2

Choose: print or screen

Deceptive Demise is short enough to work on a screen. If you’re testing the format quickly, open it in a PDF reader. If you want the proper case file experience – writing notes, spreading evidence on a table – then print it. It works fine in black and white.

3

Read the case introduction

The first will explain how these types of games work and give you the link to the hints and answers page. You’ll then get a breakdown of the victim and suspects.

4

Work through the evidence

Examine the interview transcripts, access logs, and personal documents. Objective one asks you to establish who had access and when. Objective two asks you to identify the killer. Both answers can be worked out from the evidence you’ve been given – no general knowledge or Googling is needed.

5

Submit your answers online

Each objective has a multiple choice answer sheet where you can choose what you think is correct. You find out immediately if you’re right. If you’re wrong, you can go back to the evidence and look harder. Optional hints are available if you get stuck.

When to Go Beyond Free

If you finish Deceptive Demise and want more – more evidence, more suspects, and a deeper story – we’ve got 7 other cases that you’ll love. They have between 3 and 7 objectives to complete. However, none of the paid cases are as easy as the demo. A standard objective might have multiple steps in order to complete it, so you’ll need anything from 2-4 hours free to complete one of them. But you’ll have a great time doing it.

Moving to a full case A Fatal Ruse is the natural next step after Deceptive Demise – medium difficulty, four objectives, 27 pages of content, currently $8.50. It takes 2-3 hours and uses the same investigation structure as the free case, just expanded significantly and at a higher difficulty. If you liked what Deceptive Demise showed you about the format, check out A Fatal Ruse next.

Online vs Printable: Which Works Better for Murder Mystery Games?

There are some online cases that have interesting features that make playing online worth it. These are things like videos, fake online portals and databases that you can access. These types of games can you the feeling of being a hacker trying to solve a case.

However, the main problem with online cases is the scrolling of text. You generally need to jump back and forth between documents and compare different pieces of evidence in order to make connections. I’ve yet to find a case that has done this in a way that hasn’t given me a headache.

Printable cases allow you to hold up pieces of information next to each other to compare them. You can use a highlighter to mark off parts of an investigation that might be useful later, and you can scribble notes in the margins of your page to remember important details. I’ve always found that printable games have given me the most detective-like experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a free online murder mystery game?

A free online murder mystery game is a detective case you can play without needing to pay anything. You can either play it directly in a browser or print it from a PDF. They range from short browser-based interactive cases to printable mini case files. They are designed to be introductions to the genre, and will have fewer objectives and a shorter investigation than a full-length paid case. The best free options, like Deceptive Demise, give you a complete case experience but at a shorter length.

Can you play a murder mystery case file without printing it?

Short cases like Deceptive Demise work reasonably well on a screen. Full-length cases have many more pages of evidence and are much harder to manage on screen as you’ll need to scroll back and forth continuously. For free short cases, screen play is fine. For paid full cases, printing is strongly recommended.

How long does Deceptive Demise take to complete?

30-45 minutes. It has two objectives, three suspects, and an easy difficulty rating – designed specifically as an accessible first case. A full case will take about 6x as long and each objective can have multiple parts to it.

Is Deceptive Demise actually free, or is there a catch?

Deceptive Demise is completely free. It’s available as a PDF download. The download is offered via the Print Mysteries newsletter, so you may be asked for an email address to receive it.

What’s the difference between browser-based murder mystery games and printable case files?

Browser-based games are played entirely on screen – you click through evidence, submit answers, and navigate a digital interface. Printable case files are PDFs you download and print. You can then use a highlighter on the pages to mark off important information, write notes in the margins and compare evidence from one page with another. Full-length cases are only playable in printed format while short online cases can be completed online.
