Murder Mystery: A Fatal Ruse (Solved)

Jonathan’s Murder

We brought Jacob Kline in for a second interrogation and confronted him with all the evidence we had on him:

He had written a love letter to Monica Monroe and signed it off as J. At first, we thought it was a love letter from Jonathan to Monica, but we later read in Emily’s diary that Jonathan had never left the US (meaning that he could not be the person that M had spent time with in Mexico).

We also had the text message that was sent from Monica’s burner phone to Jacob. Although she never used that number to call Jonathan, it was displayed on her hotel invoice. This shows us that the 2 of them were more than just acquaintances. In the text message, Monica also calls Jacob her “lion” which may refer to the large lion tattoo that Jacob has on his chest (marked on his military report). The same military report also showed that Jacob had combat medic experience and was more than capable of trying to save someone’s life.

Most importantly, Jacob knew that Jonathan had a safe – and that it was filled with money. Jonathan would not have shared this info with just anyone, so Jacob most likely found out about it through Monica.

Jacob’s Confession

Under the weight of the piling evidence, Jacob broke down and confessed:
He and Monica had started a whirlwind romance after meeting one day when he visited Jonathan. They were planning to stage a break in to empty the safe and run away together. Jonathan had made Monica sign a prenup, so she would not have received any money if they simply divorced.

Monica had called Jonathan to make sure that he was at work before signaling Jacob through her text message that it was safe to enter. Unfortunately, Jonathan decided to come home early and caught Jacob in the act of trying to open the safe. The safe combination code given to him my Monica did not work, so he used the opportunity to make Jonathan open the safe for him. After, when Jonathan lunged for the gun, Jacob accidentally shot him. He tried to resuscitate him after the fact, but was unsuccessful.

Jacob and Monica have both been taken into custody.

Emily and Richard

The evidence proves that Emily and Richard were too far away from the house on the night of the shooting to be involved. They were meeting that night in order for Emily to pay Richard $50,000.

Emily Parker is being investigated for stealing money from Jonathan’s firm, and Richard is being investigated for blackmailing Emily and accepting stolen money.
